World Animal Day reminds us that the world is not just for humans; the survival of animals also requires our attention and efforts. On this day, people all around the world engage in various activities to raise awareness about the welfare of animals. Animal welfare organizations provide parasite medication for stray dogs, there are actions against live animal exports in Australia, advocacy against illegal hunting in Lebanon, and voices raised for the welfare of working animals (horses and donkeys) in Afghanistan.

The activities held on World Animal Day in different parts of the world also serve as a reminder that different animals face different circumstances that need to be addressed. Everyone has a responsibility to protect and respect animals, whether they are pets like cats and dogs, farm animals, wildlife, laboratory animals, or animals used in entertainment. Every life is unique and deserving of cherishing.

Nowadays, Taiwan has achieved many achievements to be proud of:

• Promoting TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) programs: By using the method of capturing, neutering, and returning stray animals, we control their population while ensuring they have a better quality of life.

• Establishing animal protection zones: Places like the Animal Shelter in Taipei City provide a well-equipped environment for stray animals to temporarily reside, while also giving citizens more opportunities to adopt instead of purchase.

• Strengthening animal protection laws: Taiwan has implemented stricter penalties for animal abuse, ensuring that every life is respected.

Animals are not just pets; they are also companions who share this land with us. Let’s speak up for the rights of animals. With just a small effort, we can promote animal protection and make Taiwan an even better place.
